The short difference between ECD Level 4 and Level 5
An NQF level describes the complexity of learning. It does not automatically tell you whether a programme is currently open for enrolment, whether a particular provider may offer it, or whether you meet the entry requirements.
The legacy Further Education and Training Certificate: Early Childhood Development is recorded by SAQA at NQF Level 4 with 140 credits. It was designed to build foundational ECD practice. The National Diploma: Early Childhood Development is recorded at NQF Level 5 with 240 credits and develops more advanced teaching, planning and leadership capability.

Who should begin with a foundation pathway?
A foundation route is usually the more sensible conversation if you are new to formal ECD study, work as an assistant, care for children without a recognised ECD qualification, or need structured confidence in everyday classroom practice.
That does not mean you should register for any course carrying the words ‘Level 4’. SAQA's record for qualification 58761 shows that it passed its end date. Ask admissions which currently approved foundation pathway is available, who quality-assures it and what certificate you will receive.
IMPORTANTNever pay because a provider says a programme is ‘equivalent’. Ask for the exact registered name, NQF level, identifier, quality assurer and current enrolment status.
When can Level 5 make sense?
Level 5 may be a stronger fit if you already have relevant learning or substantial ECD experience and want to grow into advanced practice, curriculum support, supervision, centre leadership or responsible ECD entrepreneurship.
The SAQA qualification record for the National Diploma: Early Childhood Development explains that the qualification is intended to improve ECD teaching competence and create opportunities in training, support and leadership roles. Entry still depends on the requirements attached to the programme you are considering.
